Generally speaking, the test is designed to assess knowledge of principles and concepts, written analysis, problem solving and critical thinking. This is necessary in order to register for a medical college in the USA or Canada.

Before August 2006, this was a paper-and-pen test. In January of 2007, all administrations made the switch to make this a computer-based exam. This test is very important to students. Many of which are undergraduates in their junior or senior years of college. They take the MCAT prior to applying for medical school.

The test takes approximately 4.5 to 5 hours to complete. There are many centers that offer testing throughout the year, at morning or afternoon hours. There are four main sections on the test: physical sciences or PS, verbal reasoning or VR, biological sciences or BS, and trial section, which is optional. All passages and questions have been predetermined and do not change in difficulty based on the performance of the person taking the test.

Both the physical and biological sciences parts of the exam have to be complete within 70 minutes and include 52 questions. Then there is the verbal reasoning portion, which has 40 questions and a 60-minute time frame for completion. People that do the optional section of this test will have 45 minutes to answer the 32 questions in the section.

Results of this test are very important to students interested in attending medical school. This is why many people seek tutoring services. Help is offered through many different sources and can be used as a tool for those who want to better understand the concepts and ideas covered in this test.
