IELTS is recognized worldwide as being one of the most widely accepted tests, for the student and also for those who are migrating, to foreign countries, of English. IELTS tests all the candidates for writing, listening, speaking and reading skills. Language tests are conducted by ESOL Cambridge University Examinations, British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. The individual modules are prepared according to the discipline which the student wants to appear in.

IELTS testing offers you two formats; the first will be General Training and the next Academic. IELTS practice models and material is modeled in the real test so the students will be able to find the requirements that they are expected to fulfill. The duration of the exams are 30 minutes for listening part comprising of 40 questions, one hour each for reading and writing and about 10-15 minutes for the speaking part. The modules for listening -speaking are the same and those of reading- writing remain same. A student has to appear and attempt all four sections of the tests to obtain a band score.

In the writing portion the candidate will be asked to perform two tasks and in reading he will answer 40 questions. These are tests to determine how skilled and adaptable the person is in working atmospheres which require independent tackling of problems in English language. The high testing standards reflect the toughness of the test and the scores tell of how capable and deserving the person is. Examinations are conducted in real life situations by the organizers so that they are able to assess the skills of the student when he is asked to answer questions within a given time period.

Over 135 countries accept the IELTS score for admissions to universities, tertiary institutes, schools and training colleges. All tests papers are designed to be uniform and fair, and for this the language variations of the local language is taken into account, this makes sure that the results are fairly the same. For people who want to study or want to migrate to English-speaking zones such as UK, New Zealand, Australia and Canada tests scores they obtain will secure their admission. It also serves as the benchmark for the standardization of admissions to a lot of government institutions, agencies and departments. In addition to private and professional industrial bodies, several multinational companies utilize these scores to make an assessment of the skill level of the person applying for any vacancy. The test is universally recognized and that is the reason for its popularity among the students.

Every year exams are conducted by IELTS on 48 specially nominated days at locations that are given by them. IELTS tests do not have a pass or a fail mark but rather all are given grades. The students are graded in the scale of 1 till 9 in the IELTS tests. Aspirants will be told that they can attempt the test unlimited times. To write the exam again, one has to re-apply on or before the date specified in the application form. Application for the test may be obtained from the respective test centers that are nominated by the organizing committee. Researchers and scholars are also encouraged and given awards at the annual function that recognizes the contribution of the scholar in the field of testing of English.
