Lab Technician Jobs: What Is Expected From Me?

By Miquel Deputy

As a lab technician, your role is to perform a wide variety of tests and procedures on body fluids and other specimens so that physicians can make an accurate diagnosis of a patient's condition and recommend the best treatment method as well. While lab technician jobs are continuing to increase each year, improving your competency should help you get ahead of the pack.

You will have to start focusing on the details listed on your resume if you want to be hired for high-paying lab technician jobs. To get started at the right track, it would be wise to get into a formal training program that will endow you with the skills and knowledge you'll need as a lab technician. Acquiring at least an associate's degree or bachelor's degree will help you get the results you want.

You can choose among the long list of universities and colleges that offer formal lab technician training programs - your best bet would be schools that offer training programs that are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The current trend dictates that better lab technician jobs await applicants that have graduated from an accredited training program.

Once you have completed your lab technician training program you must also move on to getting certified as this can also significantly boost your marketability. Ideally, you would want to get certified by organizations such as the Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology or the American Medical Technologists. Certified lab techs find it easier to look for lab technician jobs.

In order to be qualified for lab technician jobs, there are also other important qualities that you must possess in order to perform your duties and responsibilities properly. Lab technicians have to be very good at problem-solving, have excellent analytical skills, be precise, have reliable manual dexterity, be skilled with computers, and have the ability to work under pressure.

For the most part, lab technician jobs can usually be found in general medical and surgical hospitals. In the current situation, plenty of opportunities now exist in doctor's offices, Federal Executive Branch, medical and diagnostic laboratories, and in professional schools, colleges, and universities. Salary is pretty good in this career but be aware that your actual earnings will vary depending on several factors.
