Fun Rainy Day Activities For Little Kids

By Kate Halfey

When the weather outside is not ideal for getting outside and playing, your children might be tempted to turn to the television set or a favorite video game to help them pass these indoor hours. If you wish to keep your kids having fun but want to try some activities that are a little more unplugged from the world of electronic devices, consider the following rainy day suggestions.

Sometimes we long to be enjoying our favorite outdoor activities such as a picnic, but this event certainly can occur inside the house. It can be a great deal of fun to set out the picnic blankets and offer a basket of food to the kids and let them enjoy an indoor picnic. You can invite stuffed animals, bring along pillows and favorite books and enjoy an afternoon of eating, reading and relaxing. If you have a small tent, you can even set this up and having and "camp" indoors. Don't forget to roast some marshmallows and tell a few camping tales.

Art projects are always a great idea, whether the day is sunny or rainy, but they are particularly well suited to days with inclement weather. Among the many fun art activities for kids are murals that feature the works of famous artists. These murals are available for a small fee from sites such as ArtProjectsForKids.org. They feature famous works from artists such as Van Gogh, Picasso, Kandinsky and much more. You simply download the pages of the mural, and your children color in the lines based upon the colors of the original painting. At the end of the day, they will have recreated an amazing famous work of art.

There are many other options for rainy day art crafts for kids. You can make giant papier-mch animals, create something cool out of clay or Play-Do and make crafts out of popsicle sticks or pipe cleaners and much more. You can paint with washable paints or watercolors or even draw a picture with crayon and then add watercolor on top of it. If a holiday is approaching, consider having your kids make crafts that can be used to decorate the house.

One great thing to have ready in your rainy day arsenal would be some type of scavenger hunt. This could be a simple list of items found within your home, and you could even hide some items and leave clues as to the whereabouts. You could also have the kids find an item for each letter of the alphabet or items of certain colors. Another fun option is a Find and Do scavenger hunt where kids find something, complete a task and then hunt for something new and complete another little task. For example, the first thing they hunt for could be a handful of Legos and then they have to create something using all of the blocks. Then they have to find 20 toothpicks and 20 mini marshmallows and then build something out of these items. Other items might include finding a shiny object under their pillow, and the activity could be to make their bed. It's a fun way to fit in a couple of quick chores as well.

Baking or cooking is another way to pass the time. Children love to help in the kitchen, and you could bake some bread or cookies or prepare soup for dinner or attempt any recipe you think everyone will like. Small children can stir, add ingredients and tear up lettuce leaves, while older kids can measure, chop, use the mixer and accomplish other important tasks. You could also try something interesting such as making butter or ice cream the old fashioned way. There are tons of easy recipes online.
