How To Handle New York Traffic

By Ines Flores

Sitting in a car buildup can be frustrating as well as time consuming. Being one of the major cities in the world, New York traffic can really be a major pain. Knowing the ins and outs of the city and how to get around this problem can save a lot of time, money and, of course, energy.

It's important to be aware of the best times to avoid entering or leaving the city. There are peak hours of traffic that one should take note of. Of course these hours tend to be first thing in the morning and also in the evening when people are headed back home, with slightly lesser amounts of car buildup around the afternoon time.

Most people will agree that being on your way between five and six in the morning is a good thing. Once it reached after six o' clock, the buildup of cars will have already begun. Even though leaving at such an early hour to get into the city will mean there is extra time to kill upon arrival, it's a great chance to have a little quiet time or enjoy a hot tea or coffee before the day really begins.

If you don't want to get caught after work, consider leaving earlier, like around 3:30 in the afternoon. If you aren't as lucky to finish what you have to do so early, then think about waiting until after 7:00pm to make a move. Again, this will give you some time to find something interesting and entertaining to do. Other tolerable times to drive in New York are between 10:00am and 3:00pm, but still anticipate some measure of traffic.

You can use mobile apps and even the Internet to help you best plan your movements. A site like MyFoxNY has a great resource where you can check all types of transportation and any interruptions in schedules or roadworks etc. You can also tune into a radio station in a particular area to hear the traffic report specific to your location. The mobile apps available are many, but some of the most popular include MTA Subway Time, HopStop or Waze, which can help drivers and other modes of transport.

You can use other modes of transport if you don't feel like driving in New York. In fact, it is preferred. If you love to look at the sights and experience the sounds of the city, then walking is your best bet. It's absolutely free and very convenient.

However, if time is of the essence, the best way to get around the city is using the subway. While there is a lot of stigma surrounding the safety and efficiency of the subway system, the truth remains that it is actually incredibly safe and still the fastest and cheapest way to get where you're going. Added to that the buskers and characters seen underground and this becomes an entertaining experience.

Finally, a great way to save time and money but not have to use the subway is to travel by bike. Even if someone does not have their own bicycle, the city recently implemented the Citibike system for convenience. Furthermore, with special lanes and routes designated for bikes only, this is a great way to explore and get where you're going fast.
