Once they grasp the concept, it can be embellished upon in more depth and detail. These are essentially the most important building blocks for future successes.

Most are printable from the internet and the comfort of your own home. Better still, they are attainable at any hour when the whim strikes. They may have colorful pictures, recognizable objects, and are set out clearly. Their lessons vary in difficulty according to the age of the child, and are usually set out in a manner that teaches the fundamentals very easily.

These worksheets are excellent for practice purposes, and build confidence, not to mention speed. The more they get right, the more they will want to challenge themselves. The praise they get when they finish a worksheet and achieve full marks will be reward enough.

Simple techniques can be loads of fun to learn. Games which include sorting or pattern matching can be very enjoyable. Colors are a good way to teach counting and to recognize what numbers look like. Certain colors can be grouped in one box, while the others are shared amongst the children. This is a good way to teach, subtraction and division.

In mathematics, finding the pattern is vital. This is a technique which can be taught and practiced. For a small child, this can be a very exciting exercise, and need not be an expensive one at that. Little patterns can easily be created using colored paper, beads, bottle tops etc. Color is not the only pattern that they will thrive at. Shapes are good for patterns as is repetition.

Shape recognition as well as the number of points a shape has, teaches counting, and the names of the required shapes. This is the first step in early geometry. By repeating shapes in a certain way, pattern detection is learned. These are very important skills which create the foundations to a good understanding for future lessons.

By playing physical games, such as jumping or leap frog, counting and number recognition can be taught quite simply. Use a dice or an object with numbers on it, and they then have to jump the correct amount of times as stated on the dice. Pictures on the worksheets also teach counting and simple addition or subtraction. By identifying that the pictures are the same, they can count how many are left if for instance one is subtracted.

Learning through play, is best for toddlers who need the lessons to be visual and tactile. They remember everything and once the basics are acquired they will then be ready for more formal training at primary school level. These skills are important for them to have as a basic foundation to fall back on. If they understand the concept then it will be easier for them to add to it, at the next level.
