Becoming a mom for the first time is exciting, but there are also other anxieties which can come up. It is new journey in one's life. There is so much that one has to think of. It could be that there has not been that much of an increase in the disorder. Most of the time, mental health professionals only begin to discover about new disorders later on as they do more research. In the past decades, it is still a fact that women were suffering from depression after having a baby. However, it was not dealt with. It was often put down to something else.

However, when it begins to affect your mood where you are depressed and prefer to stay away from family and friends, you should begin to be more concerned. Often, this will show up a few weeks after the birth. In some cases, it will take a few months, which is more common. The partner of the mom will know her best and will be able to notice a change in behaviour.

When you are feeling depressed, it is obviously easier to cope with because you don't have as many responsibilities. You may have to be at work and you may have children to take care of. However, it can become a lot more complicated when you have a baby to take care of. One can imagine what it must be like when you are feeling exhausted because of the midnight wakings and additional things that a mom has to do.

When you are constantly exhausted, you become irritable and frustrated with yourself. This is a type of depression which can become very serious. It is often compared to a major depressive disorder. However, along with this the new mom will feel a lot of anxiety come into their lives. This especially relates to the fact that they simply don't want to be left with the newborn on their own.

A person who has postpartum depression will more than likely struggle with this when they have had a history with depression in the past. The pregnancy may have been complicated. Some women are more likely to have this type of depression when they are suffering from a particular illness or when their baby was born with an illness, for example.

It can be terrible to have to deal with this on your own and this can happen when you feel that this is part of the process. However, most people realize that this is not the way in which you are supposed to be feeling. Friends and family members will also begin to reach out and encourage you to seek support.

It is a little different from the baby blues where you are struggling to adjust to a change in the routine and to the lifestyle. Baby blues is very common, and you will have days where you are extremely tired and it can even turn into a tears because of these overwhelming emotions. However, a person who has postpartum depression is more affected by moods.
