Lawyers are people who specialize in the field of law. Some of the areas they specialize include international, environmental, bankruptcy, maritime, and probate law among others. Also, since the field of law is divided into two major categories, that is, civil and criminal, lawyers can also specialize in the cases they pick. A number of lawyers direct their focus to public relations, with an interest to change enforcement of the law in some areas. As a result, they pick up cases based on their impact. These lawyers may specialize in offering services to special groups. Such case filings are often aimed at forcing the government to change application of a certain law in some area.

In some cases, a lawyer may be employed on full-time basis by a single client. The client may be an organization such as a company or the government. In some cases, the client may be a person. In cases where the client is a company, the lawyer is referred using the term house counsel. The job of house counsel is to provide legal representation and advice in legal cases.

If the client is the government, there are several names that can be used to refer to such lawyers depending on the job they do and the level of government at which they serve. Those that represent members of the public that cannot afford to hire their own lawyers are called public defenders. On the contrary prosecutors prosecute criminals.
