The government generally passes certain laws which are very beneficial to the society. These laws protect every right of an individual. It protects every human right and build a certain system for the criminal process. To understand more about the process, it is necessary to understand what is a crime. Actually, criminal law serves various purposes and benefits to the society as a whole. The law also makes everything possible, especially in resolving disputes and conflicts between quarreling citizens. It gives a peaceful and orderly way in handling grievances.

There are different categories of crimes, felonies and misdemeanors. Felonies, such as murder, rape, arson, kidnapping and robbery are considered as serious misconducts. The government usually considers one year and more of prison if someone is found guilty.

However, there are also less offenses called as a misdemeanor, such as speeding, trespassing, vandalism and public intoxication. Most of the states have considered this offense to be a crime and punishable by less than a year of imprisonment. But, some states punished anyone by fines.

The laws usually protect all citizens from criminals who causes physical and verbal harms. The government can also collect taxes and other social or beneficial tasks. It greatly protects everyone and their rights. Furthermore, crimes has also its basic components. These composed with a guilty act and guilty mind.

Actually, a guilty act is considered as a crime. Meaning, anyone who violates the government law. The guilty mind usually speaks more to the mental condition of the accused when committing the crime. Moreover, each offense has its respective definition. For those who found guilty to any committed crimes, the individual actions and even the mindset should also fit the definition of the crimes.

If found guilty with any types of crimes, the court will usually issue a sentence during the criminal trial. A sentence is a certain punishment to any person who are accused of committing a crime and if found guilty. There are actually different types of sentences. Some of these are the Fines and actually assigned to those person found culpable of misdemeanors, such as shoplifting. Next is the prison time. Anyone who will be sent to jail for committing illegal activities, such as felony offenses.

According to the government law, if you are accused with any offense or crimes, you will be provided with any legal representation, if you cannot afford an attorney.
