All About The Flsa Laws

By Tracie Knight

In the workforce, it is very important that one knows his rights as an employee when it comes to his wages and compensations. In the United States, these set of laws are known as the Fair Labor Standards Act or simply the flsa laws. It is these set of laws that would ensure that each worker will get his fair share of money from the employer.

Now the man behind this very fair act was none other than the United States senator Hugo Black. Now he made this proposal sometime during the very early thirties but it was not approved because many other senators did not agree with some of the clauses. Eventually, the late thirties saw the approval of this bill with a few revisions made to be fair to the employers.

Now if one is not familiar with this law, then this overview will definitely be able to give him an idea about what it is all about. One of the most crucial things to take note of here would be the implementation of the minimum wage and the compensation for overtime. The law states that employers are not allowed to pay employees anything less than minimum wage and that if workers work overtime, they are entitled to get an overtime pay of one and a half times their regular compensations.

Now in the United States, gender discrimination in the workplace was actually very common before this law was passed. Under this law, gender discrimination when it comes to compensation is illegal which means that everyone will receive what they actually deserve regardless of gender. Gone are the days when men get paid more simply because they are men.

Now there is also a law that would protect underage employees from jobs that they cannot do. This act states that only children who are physically and mentally capable may work and that children under eighteen cannot do very dangerous jobs. Now there is also a clause that states that children under sixteen cannot work during school hours.

This law would also mention those who are already considered seniors. For businesses that would have more than twenty workers, employers are not allowed to have age discrimination against workers who are forty years old or older. Now as long as the worker is able, then he will have the same treatment as the other younger workers.

Of course this law would also protect the farmers and the agricultural workers when it comes to compensation so that they will not get less than they actually deserve. There were too many cases wherein these types of workers were paid poorly by their employers. Under the law, they are protected and as long as they register with the Department of Labor, they can avail of this protection.

Now as one can see, these laws were made for the sole protection of workers. Without proper laws, there were many workers who were not compensated properly by their employers. Of course these set of laws leveled the playing field a bit.
