Discovering The Role Of FDA Regulatory Consulting

By Maria Cook

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is responsible for the primary oversight of health and safety in America. As such, FDA regulatory consulting is often an undertaking by several different people in the organization. As part of the primary role of the agency, inspectors and investigators work to assure health and safety in all areas of business as related to food, drug and safety concerns and issues.

The USFDA is one of the executive departments of the government. Now, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, it is responsible for protecting and promoting health through ongoing supervision of food, prescription medication, dietary supplements, over the counter pharmaceuticals, bio-pharmaceuticals and tobacco products. In addition, the organization also oversees the distribution and quality of vaccines, blood transfusions, radiation emitting devices, animal foods and medication along with some cosmetics and cosmetic surgeries.

The United States congress first developed the organization to aid in assuring the overall health and well being of citizens. The primary Act, known as the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act went into effect immediately upon approval. After which, the agency's primary focus became to enforce laws related to food, drink, drugs and other areas.

Other areas which the agency oversees are related to safety when it comes to condoms, regulations related to cell phones and lasers, sperm donation and bacteria growing on a number of products while still residing on department and grocery store shelves. While these items are not directly related to food or drugs, each have the ability to harm if not regulated on a regular basis.

The head of the agency is the Commissioner of Food and Drugs. While the title only refers to the two most common threats as associated with illness, overdose or tainted pharmaceuticals, there are other areas in which the department also has oversight. Although, as the position is often replaced upon the election of a new president, the term is generally somewhere between four to eight years. As such, the laws and associated oversight often changes based on those in charge at any given time.

Currently, the organization is scattered among a number of cities, towns, states and countries. While this is the case, there is a push to consolidate most of these departments into one location in Washington D. C. Although, there are two departments which will most likely remain in tact, these are the Office of Criminal Affairs and the Office of Regulatory Affairs. For, most employees of these two departments have and always will work from remote offices located in different regions.

As most business owners and managers know, the main aspect of the agency is to inspect and report on the health conditions of various establishments. In most cases, businesses are provided a grade. Those keeping a clean and safe workplace often receive the highest of these grades. However, those whom fail inspections can often receive a deadline in which improvements are necessary in order to remain open and operating.

Ultimately, business owners, doctors, pharmacies, restaurant owners and workers are responsible for maintaining health and safety when it comes to these practices. As part of the process, most locations serving food, or prescribing medication require workers to present or obtain a valid health code before beginning work. Whereas, there are some locations such as booths at festivals and private parties which may not have this requirement.
