A Guide On How To Apply For Canadian Residency

By Agnes Dickson

If you become a permanent resident of one country, it would mean that you may live and may work around that country. Still, you are not allowed to vote or to occupy a post. You also could not live outside the country for years. You may also go to school and, for other countries, receive their health benefits.

You can have those benefits when you become a resident in Canada. There are a few steps on how to apply for Canadian residency. You just have to follow those steps in order for you to have that status.

First, you should understand that you may be a resident but you are still not a citizen of that country. You also have to pay taxes and obey the law. If you are a resident, you may apply for citizenship after living there for a number of years.

You are required to get a Permanent Resident Card. This card is your proof that you have a Canadian residency. If you leave Canada, you will be needing this card to be able to enter back to Canada. This card is a plastic card just like those health cards or a license. You will receive it in the mail when you have Canadian residency. It is valid for about five years. After five years, you should renew that one.

To get this, a person must be able to submit all the required documents first. One should submit a document for primary identification like their passport or their travel document. One should also submit a document for secondary identification like a license, a student ID card or their tax proof. You can provide more of this for extra proof. If a person is under 18 years old, that person is required to submit his birth certificate or papers from his guardian.

Have 2 of your photos placed inside a small envelope. They must be taken within the 12 month period of the application. Have your name written on that envelope. It must also clearly show your facial features. You should have a neutral look in the photo. You can wear your glasses or an accessory but be sure it will not hide your facial features.

If you have papers not written in English or in French, you must include the English or the French translation of that. You must also submit an affidavit from the one who made the translation. See to it that it is certified. It should not be certified by any family member. It is a must that you have it certified only in Canada.

Fill out the application forms. Be sure all information is provided and is accurate. If some important information is not provided, your application will be returned to you and would just delay your application. Pay for the fee. Currently, it costs fifty US dollars. Print the receipt as it will serve as your proof of payment. Have your application mailed to one of their processing centers.

Having Canadian residency gives you lots of benefits. Your rights and benefits would almost be like be a citizenship. You will also be protected by their law. If you want to become one, just be sure that you are qualified to apply.
