A criminal record is automatically generated by law enforcing government agencies once they report an incident. These records are one of the many public documents that can be obtained by the local people. This was done in accordance to the Freedom of Information Act.

A criminal record is generated whenever a crime has been committed. These are the records that contain information about the crimes committed by a certain individual. One can also find the basic information of the convicted. Such information includes the complete name and the date of birth of the individual. Other information related to the individual such as the aliases used and the physical description of the individual are found on the file. It also has a detailed description of body markings of the individual. Information about the crimes previously committed by the individual is also documented on the file. The sentences and the charges against the convicted individual can also be found on the record.

To check out the criminal history of an individual is one of the top reasons for accessing criminal records. Employers look into the criminal records of their employees to make sure that the people they have are the rights one's for their job. This also prevents problems related to employee relations in the workplace. However, applicants with previous criminal history are now having difficulties in finding a job because of their records. This somehow hinders them from getting a decent and good job.

Another reason why people access criminal records is that they want to ensure that the information found on their personal files are correct. Some issues had been raised before where the crimes indicated on one's file are not for them. Others have also reported that they have pending arrest warrants for crimes that they were not aware of. It is then recommended by the local government to be always vigilant in checking one's personal record.

One can get a copy of a criminal record at the office that issued the report. This can be the police department, the traffic department or the sheriff's office. Such offices can only give out recent reports. For older reports and incidents, it can be requested at the Department of Justice. This is where the public crime related files are being managed. Going through any of the office would take some time. The requested record can be given after several days.

Online criminal records are now made possible. This is the option chosen by many because it is faster and convenient. One can also ensure that the records are authentic because websites are liked to public and private databases in order to provide the best results. One can choose from a free search or a paid search. Many would still go for the paid search because it returns a more an accurate and reliable result.
