Why It Is Important To Only Pursue An Accredited Health Program

By Maria Taylor

Are you considering taking a health program? Then, the first question to ask should be whether it is accredited or not. This means that the university, college or institution has been permitted to offer the course and it will add value to your professional qualification. An accredited health program has gained approval from the community, state and regional bodies.

The process of accreditation is regarded as evaluation or assessment by an independent body. It involves assessing the merits and weaknesses of a course. Through the process of accreditation, you can ascertain that necessary standards for trainers, the environment and content have been met. As such, the course or institution has fulfilled the requirements of the checks and balances put in place.

It is upon the institution seeking to offer a course to ensure that it meets stipulated standards. Neutrality of members of the panel is also important to avoid conflict of interest. The criterion used is to check where the depths and breaths of instructions have been met, whether professors have necessary training and if the institution has met set standards. Their understanding of the industry makes the panel well equipped to evaluate the course.

Accreditation process is easy and straightforward almost to the point of becoming a rubber stamp. The views of members of the team are important and will determine whether approval is given. The government has provided goodwill to accrediting institutions and does not interfere. For schools, accreditation is voluntary because it highlights areas where improvements should be made.

For the institution, accreditation is meant to instill a sense of confidence that the public will get quality learning. For the student, the benefits go beyond confidence. An accredited unit will help you get financial aid to complete your course with ease. In fact, the government only funds courses that have accreditation from the Department of education.

A student may need to transfer to another institution. If both institutions have accreditation, the process of transfer will be seamless. There will be no need to repeat the course or waste both time and money. You do not have to abandon your course once you move to another state or county.

Accreditation is mandatory for you to get a practice licenses especially in some professions like nursing, pharmacy, massage and physical therapy, among others. It is impossible to sit for board examinations without graduating from an institution that has necessary accreditation. Without a license, practicing your trade will be virtually impossible.

The job market has high regard for professionals with accreditation. Many people seeking health services want proof that you are trained and will handle their bodies well. In the absence of accreditation and consequently a license, it will be difficult to get clients. The process shows that you are serious about the profession you will be engaged. The Department of Education and health regulatory authorities have lists of courses and institutions that are accredited.
