Significance Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy In NYC

There are many types of therapy developed over the years to deal with a number of different issues affecting people with hard to treat conduct. One approach generally accepted as an effective method of treating a number of different issues is dialectical behavior therapy in NYC. This is a cognitive behavioral approach, which puts emphasis on psychological aspects in treatment. It was developed by, Marsha M. Linehan, a psychologist. It was designed to treat all borderline personality disorders. Today it is the main treatment used in dealing with different types of mental disorders around New York City.

The going theory is that, people react differently to different situations. It focuses on those that have intense reactions towards emotional situations like those found in close relationships. This theory suggests that these some people have higher arousal levels in those situations tend to increase much faster than an average person does. They attain a higher emotional stimulation level and take a larger amount of time returning to baseline levels of arousal.

Those suffering from this personality behavior experience many mood swings that get extreme. They will get really happy, sad or angry. The sad fact is that many people including loved ones do not know how to handle such situations. Instead, they apply a lot of pressure to these individuals to conform to normal conduct that is acceptable. This leaves victims to suffer alone since they do not have any support and lack proper coping mechanisms.

Dialectical behavior therapy method teaches skills, which help such victims cope with the emotional surges they experience. It is currently the main therapy used to treat this condition. It has been identified as effective in treating other disorders like depression, substance dependence, eating disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder. It uses two principles that are opposite to one another. These are change and acceptance. Therapists accept the condition of the clients but realize that there is a need to change.

There are four skills of conduct taught. One ought to be mindful and aware of the current situation they find themselves in and try to stay grounded. Distress tolerance teaches clients to accept pain instead of trying to change the situation. Interpersonal effectiveness allows them the freedom to ask for their desires and feel free to refuse using a manner that supports meaningful relationships. Emotional regulation teaches effective methods of changing unwanted emotions.

The therapy prioritizes treatment targets because different clients have different levels of problems. It allows the therapist to use a hierarchy of treatment to target problems in order of priority. Life threatening tendencies are first to be targeted and include suicide and bodily harm. The next are those issues that interfere with treatment. These include anything that interfere with sessions such as being late, cancelling appointments and lack of collaboration in tackling problems.

Behaviors that affect quality of life are identified. This category consists of issues like relationships, financial situations, housing crises or even mental disorders. Acquisition of skills refers to learning of new skills in a bid to replace ineffective deeds.

Recent research shows that dialectical behavior therapy is effective in dealing with a number of issues. These include reducing suicidal tendencies, reducing injuries, psychiatric hospitalization, substance abuse, treatment dropout, depression, anger and improving social functioning. It has been very successful and has achieved great results.
