Choosing The Best UMN Off Campus Housing

By Marci Nielsen

When people move to institutions of higher learning, they often prefer to live on their own. After all, everyone always want to have their privacy. On the other hand, there are also frustrations with off campus life that some students may gloss over until it is too late. All in all, you have to weigh out the pros and cons before you make the big move to an off campus residence. Just to make sure that you are making the right choice, here are a few factors you need to keep in mind when moving to UMN off campus housing.

Perhaps the first thing that you should consider when looking for off campus housing is the size. As a student, you need to look for a room that is large enough to house all your belongings. The houses usually vary in sizes such that you can get a small room where the capacity is just limited to one person. There are also some houses that can accommodate more than one person. It is therefore upon you as the student to decide what size of house will be enough for you.

Unless you are very philanthropic, which most students are not, you will also want an affordable place. The only way you will be able to secure affordable place is by comparing rates from various hostels against what they offer. However, you should also remember in mind that you will only get whatever you have paid for. In other words, you should avoid hostels that are extremely cheap. This could be a sign that something is amiss in them.

Before you accept to live in any residence, you must also confirm that it has constant supply of water and electricity. These are some of the important social amenities that you cannot live without. Because you cannot tell when the transformer will blow off, it is also important that the hostel you choose have a standby generator. In addition to water and electricity, free internet is also important. As a student, you will need to conduct a lot of research over the internet, this is why internet is very important.

The exact location of the hostel is also very important when determining a house to rent. A house that is located close to the college would be the most ideal. In addition, you should consider ease of accessibility. In other words, there should be good roads leading to the house.

The hostel you choose must also be in a secure environment. In other words, the security in the neighborhood must just be exception. You should not take any risk with security matters. If you are not fully convinced that the place is secure, there best thing to do would be to withdraw from it.

The easiest way to get ideal residence is to engage property agents. This way, you will be able to find a good hostel within a very short time span. You should however remember that you will have to pay a small agency fee to the agent.

Once you settle for a hostel, the next step is to sign a leasing contract. The contract should entail all the terms of engagement. However, before you append your signature on such a document, it is very important that you go through it word by word and internalize its contents.
