Designing Fashion & Critical Do's & Don'ts, With Christina Kelly

By Rebecca Mills

If you're at all familiar with fashion design, you can probably imagine that it's one of the most diverse talking points to be imagined. Christina Kelly and others can say the same, especially when there are so many people who have been able to thrive in this field. In order for you to follow suit, though, there are certain methods you'd be wise to take up. By following these do's and don'ts, it will not be long until you find the success you crave.

Do try to be creative. It might go without saying, but the ones who succeed in fashion design the most are those who are creative. The likes of Christina Kelly can say the same, even if certain concepts do not pan out as well as expected. By simply taking risks, aspiring designers are able to create new ideas that will, hopefully, prove to be more successful. You will not be able to find such success, though, without taking few risks.

Don't try to over-complicate your work. It's easy to imagine that the best work in fashion design is usually very simple. After all, no one wants to be overwhelmed when they are presented something, and the clothing that others create is no different. Simplicity is nothing short of vital, which I'm sure that names like Christina Kelly can attest to. By keeping things less complicated, your chances of attaining success will become greater.

Do focus on what's trendy. Another point that should be a given is the importance of trends. Even though a good number of them tend to fade away in due time, it's still vital to consider what they can bring to the table. Being an expert in fashion design means that you constantly read up, and study what's most popular in the current landscape. Stay in the loop; otherwise, you run the risk of creating wares that will fall under the radar.

Don't miss out on creating a portfolio. The more time that you spend in fashion design, the more work that you'll have to show for it. With this in mind, do not be shy about including this type of work in a portfolio. The reason for this is that employers are going to want an impression of what you're capable of. As a result, you should try to include everything from rough drafts to completed work. Without a strong portfolio - and names such as Christina Kelly can say the same - you won't garner as much attention.
