Information About Propane Appliances & Propane Prices

By Cath Buhr

If you are studying up on different types of household energy sources, you might consider switching over to a propane tank instead of staying with natural gas or coal. This is an excellent option for many rural and suburban residents who want to lessen their dependence on the grid and be a bit more self-reliant.

There are some costs associated with starting up propane service. You will need to have a tank installed, and you can lease a tank or purchase one. In addition, your current appliances will need to be converted so that they can run on propane rather than natural gas. You also can replace your appliances with energy-efficient propane appliances, which can be a good way to reduce your monthly propane usage and, in the long run, save money.

Obviously, there are plenty of high quality propane furnaces and ovens and cooktops on the market, but there are many other propane-powered appliances to consider. You can purchase a cast iron stove powered by propane, which is not only a lovely decorative feature, it also provides plenty of heat. Of course, your fireplace also can run on propane rather than natural gas or wood.

Propane also can be used as energy source for your refrigerator/freezer as well as your washer and your dryer. Obviously, you don't have to run out and purchase all new appliances as soon as your propane tank has been set up, but over time, it can be wise to make the switch.

For those who want an off-grid life, propane is often the most practical choice to fulfill your energy needs. Many people use propane as well as installing solar panels, and these are two ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Even if you don't plan on installing a propane tank or solar panels, a propane generator can be a good idea for any home. This is especially true if your area often has power outages or severe storms. Keep in mind, that if you do have a propane tank, when other people have lost power, you can still heat your home, cook meals and wash clothes.

All energy comes with a price tag, and the propane prices do change daily. Typically, there are times when the demand is lower and the price drops. Propane companies such as Thrifty Propane encourage customers to buy all or most of their yearly propane during times when the price is very low. This can really reduce your yearly energy costs, and even help you save enough money to purchase a new propane appliance.
