Time For Some Action?

By Al Duncan

Miyamoto Musashi--arguably the greatest swordsman in the history of Japan--once wrote, "Do not waste time idling or thinking after you have set your goals."

Those are the words of Japan's greatest swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. When I first read that quote in the Book of Five Rings, it really hit home with me because I know far that too many people waste time idling after setting their goals.

There are many reasons that people procrastinate after setting their goals. Those reasons include things like fear and old-fashioned laziness. One of the cures for those and many other poisonous reasons is action. Right action.

Setting goals.

Setting goals. Check.

Writing down your goals. Check.

Those are all good things, but of course it's really all about taking action on your goals.

The thing to be mindful of is that, for most people, after the setting, writing, and visualizing, they don't take enough of the right actions.

"Action. It's always your next move." I recently saw a poster with that phrase on it. The saying is attributed to Napoleon Hill. Although it is more than likely paraphrased (I looked through all of my Napoleon Hill material and couldn't find an exact match), the message is powerful.

According to the poster, those are the words of Napoleon Hill. I looked through all of my Napoleon Hill material and couldn't find an exact match so, more than likely, it's paraphrased. Yet and still the message is powerful.

In an article I wrote called "What comes first, action or motivation?", I explain that action gives birth to motivation. Not the other way around. With the right action comes increasing momentum. Next comes a heightened level of self-efficacy. Finally...achievement.

This is such a simple thing. Maybe that's why it's so difficult for many people. It's simple to do and simple not to do. So, remember, as soon as you start taking action, you are on the path to achieving your goals.

By the way, if you have been or already are working on goal. That's awesome. Keep it going. And who knows? Maybe now is a good time to start on another.

Whether it's your past, current, or future goals, it's time for some action!

Right action.
