Will Project Turtle Shell Work

By Eugenia Dickerson

Project turtle shell is a unique concept devised by a lady who describes herself as a mother and wife who is concerned about humanity surviving the effects global warming by the weather on our planet. The main theme appears to be shelter and food for all of humanity during the increasingly destructive storms that will be caused global warming.

A worldwide collaboration is the foundation of her plan using college students to implement it. College students were chosen because they generally have no political or industrial affiliations and have the youngest and brightest minds available. She suggests that all people contribute their best ideas to colleges so they may be investigated and ultimately voted on by every person on earth.

When an area is devastated by major weather events such as hurricane Sandy the damage is devastating. Common debris can become lethal items of destruction when they have one hundred mile per hour winds pushing it. At one hundred fifty miles per hour no frame structures can remain standing. The domes she envisions would not be effected by the winds.

The use of fossil fuels is what created this problem so all vehicles would be electric. The actual domes would be several stories high with lower floors designed to shelter people and the upper floors used for gardens. When high winds were dangerous steel plates would lower over the myriad of windows to prevent damage from flying debris.

The concept of growing crops under the dome is large scale. The idea she is putting out is of massive gardens, safe from the elements and capable of producing minimally two crops a year instead of one. There would be no droughts or damage from floods or insect infestation because everything could be closely monitored and controlled from within.

Anticipating the crop failures and the famine that follows will prove a major advantage for the people who live near the domes. Closer crops mean that they will receive better nutrition from what is available even when the weather is not inclement. Many nations today suffer from serious food shortages. Once installed, these gardens could help alleviate that problem.

She goes on to say that during periods of time when weather is not an issue the buildings can be put to other uses such as classrooms or any other public use so long as they can be cleared easily in case of a disaster. They could also serve as shelter for people whose homes have been destroyed by the weather disasters and permanent shelter for those left homeless.

There are a great many issues that would need to be resolved prior to any action being taken on project turtle shell. The concept, while conceptually acceptable, will take years to form and even more years to build. The gardens, even after being established will take at least a year to bear fruit and size will be an issue. The world may not be ready for total cooperation between the social, political and economic powers that run it.
