Learning About The Past Through Historical Fiction About WWII

By Angel Dudley

A tremendous amount has been written about World War two. Many people still enjoy reading books that focus on this exciting, but devastating part of our history. Some readers like factual accounts of what really happened, whilst others enjoy historical fiction about WWII. There are so many excellent and varied works that there is sure to be something to please every reader.

Readers who may think that they not interested in war stories should give a few of the most popular books a try. They will find so many works that are absolutely gripping. The characters are well written, the scenes are perfectly set and the the reader just cannot put the book down. Some authors actually used their own wartime experiences to add outstanding detail to their writings. Their books have such a realistic feel to them that many readers say they can almost feel the characters beside them.

Many novels are set in Russia. This vast land has seen more than its fair share of war and suffering. From the siege of Stalingrad to the advance of the Red army into Germany, there is so much to write about. The Russian people are underrepresented in western novels and it is always good to see them given a chance to show their side of the story.

There are some compelling naval based works that really bring their characters to life. Anyone interested in naval fiction should check out Alistair MacLean's HMS Ulysses and Nicholoas Monsarrat's The Cruel Sea. Both of these books have stood the test of time and are still as enthralling as when they were first published.

Nevil Shute is a world renowned writer who also saw action during the war. He draws on his experiences for many of his works and gives the reader a very clear picture of how the war affected people in both Australia and Malaysia.

Naval history is also a fascinating subject that lends itself well to fictional accounts. The notable author Alistair MacLean wrote many excellent spy novels. His HMS Ulysses is considered to be one of the most outstanding works of historical fiction. The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat is also highly recommended for anyone interested in not only a compelling read, but also an opportunity to learn more about the lives of those serving in the war time navy.

Children and teens can also enjoy stories set during the war. Nina Bawden's excellent book Carrie's War tells the story of a young girl and her brother evacuated from London and sent to live in the country. As the children struggle to adjust they also have to deal with the eccentric personalities of the family they live with. This book is one of the best choices for introducing young readers to the harsh realities of war.

One of the most popular works of historical fiction about WWII are those by Herman Wouk. His Winds of War and War and Remembrance make excellent reading. They have also been adapted for television and proved equally popular. Das Boat by Lothar Gunthar Buchheim is a gripping tale of the life of a U boat crew that was also made into a movie.
