Whenever a couple gets married, a marriage certificate is made to legalize the ceremony and to properly document the event. This document is one of the documents that can be accessed by the general public. The state of New York is one of the states that have allowed its people to gain access to the New York marriage records through the Vital Records Section of the Department of Health.

The residents of New York would request for the marriage records primarily to update the family history. This document is one of the sources of information that is used when conducting a genealogy research. Also, some transactions in the government would require a marriage certificate. This can be insurance related or property and dependent declaration. Background check is also one of the uses of a marriage certificate. Individuals would check the marital status of their partners to make sure that they are dating a person who is not yet married.

One can obtain a copy of a marriage record by going to the office of the Vital Records Section. This is where all public documents of New York are being managed. The office of the county clerk where the event took place is also another place to visit in order to get the needed file. There are counties where the certificate can only be requested at the county offices instead of the state office. These are the counties of Yonkers, Buffalo and Albany. Requesting for the record through the state or the county office would require the information about the marriage. The reason for requesting the document along with the personal details of the one who request for the document has to be indicated on the request form. Giving out all of the necessary things needed would help hasten the search process.

Going to the office may be too much for other people. With this, the office has allowed a mail order to be done. Other can also call the office to request for the record. Requests made through the said methods would require that the payment be sent via money order or check payment. Also, all the requirements and the accomplished application form has to be sent via the US Postal Services.

A standard fee of $30 has to be paid when requesting for the marriage certificate in New York. This applies to all of the methods available but it may vary depending on the county where it was filed. It takes a maximum of 12 weeks in order to obtain a copy of the record when it is done on any of the mentioned methods. However, this has been shortened with the help of the Internet.

Using the Internet to obtain a copy of the marriage record in New York is preferred by many. Not only because the document can be obtained faster but it is also very convenient any hassle free. There is no need to go to any offices to get the record since it can be done even at home.
