How To Rectify An Old Silt Fence Installation

By Frances Roberts

A silt fence is made of fabric and mesh wire that allows water to pass through but prevents soil from moving to the other side thus preventing soil erosion. This fence is specially designed to prevent soil erosion. It is mainly installed in farms. Sometimes, you may already have had it installed but it gets weaker with time. Below is how to resolve an old silt fence installation.

Before the repairs begin, you should survey the fence. Walk the whole length noting what needs to be replaced and what needs to be repaired. This will give you an estimate and you can come up with your budget and stick to it. If you choose to skip the survey you may end up buying excess material or buying insufficient material.

Ensure you have a high-pressure washer. After surveying the barrier, you will need to wash it. It is more like spraying it with water. This is meant to get rid of all the dirt and mold that may be on the wooden parts of the barrier. After that cleaning, the barrier starts to look a lot better. You also will be able to notice damages you would have not before.

After washing, you can go on to repair any damages such as replacing missing pails. For such a case, it is best to use zinc coated nails. You can use glue to put back together splitting wood. The glue mixed with the sawdust will help in filling out the holes that may appear. The mixture should be stiff to avoid it falling off after a while.

Repairing is also a form of renovating. When you are done making all the repairs, you will need to repaint the barrier. Considering the barrier is around plants, you do not them to get damaged with chemical substances. It is best to cover them up. You should however not use clothes as they are not furniture. Use of newspapers.

For the metallic parts of the barrier, such as the hinges you may need to cover them with masking tape to avoid them catching paint. If they are however rusted, you can let a little paint fall on them to slow down the rusting. If you choose to mask them, remember to uncover them after the paint dries up. You can also paint some wax over the metal to make it shinier.

Chose the right kind of paint. This is not in terms of color although most of the people prefer using white colour. The paint of your choosing should have sealing qualities. This means that it should be able to protect the wood from things such as insect destruction. Otherwise, if it lacks this sealing quality, the effort you put in may be short-lived.

When applying the stain, make sure the wood is dry. It may take up a lot of stain due to the high absorbency so you should buy the stain in bulk. One coat should do the trick but in the event that you see that some places need a bit more, go ahead and apply it until it looks uniform.
