Check the credentials. Becoming a reliable professional requires proper training. For one to practice in this field, they should have at least a certificate in paralegal studies. However, with the current demands of the job, it is advisable to hire someone with a four-year degree. This ensures that they are better trained and have more knowledge to bring to the table.

It is also important for a professional to take continued classes. When on the job, people tent to become detached from theory and they need to take classes regularly to keep up-to-date with the latest knowledge. Research skills are critical in paralegal work. You will need research to be conducted and reports or finding to be written and formatted properly. Choose an individual who has attained reliable experience. The law requires someone who has been in the industry and learned though observation and application. There is a lot that occurs in the industry that is never taught in school. Hence, if you are looking for someone who can work immediately without guidance, go for experience.

The individual should have good people skills. In most cases, a paralegal forms a critical link between the attorney and the client. The legal assistant is in charge of communication between the two parties. The individual also works with other members of the legal team from various jurisdictions and departments. Hence, you need someone who is also a team player.

Check the computer skills of the individual you wish to hire. Check their resume to see if they have critical computer skills necessary in your line of work. They need to be able to format documents accordingly as per different mandates. They also need have good writing skills to ensure there is no miscommunication.

Remember also to check for certification credentials. Certification is proof of professionalism and commitment to the job. One can be certified by the National Federation of Paralegals, the American Alliance of Paralegals, or the National Association of Legal Assistants. A certification by any of these bodies should suffice.

It is never easy to get a reliable legal assistant. There are many competent professionals out there. However, you may find it difficult to find someone who suits your preferences. Hence, you should tart searching when you still have adequate time.
