Specialize. As much as this may not be a prerequisite for employment, specializing in a particular area of law is encouraged. To enroll for such a course, you will need a degree or certificate in paralegal studies. Becoming an expert in a specific area will definitely increase your chances of getting work. You should therefore opt for areas that are in high demand. Areas that you can consider specializing in include federal tax, employment, criminal and business.

Seek the relevant certifications. Some employers do not mind settling for candidates who are not certified. However, being professionally certified will make you appeal more to employers as you will have an advantage above others. If you meet set requirements, you can sit for exams offered by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations. Similar examinations are also offered by the National Association of Legal Assistants.

Acquire other valuable professional skills. You will have to use a computer to complete your tasks and therefore good knowledge of office suite is desirable. Additionally, you should be skilled in internet browsing and the use of email applications. Employers are also likely to prefer candidates with good writing and communication skills. Most law schools help their students develop these professional skills.

Seek experience. Most employers have a bias for candidates who have worked in a legal environment for one or two years. You should therefore strive to find work or intern at a law firm. Some of the duties you may be assigned during such a stint include answering phone calls, assisting other paralegals and filing. These duties will definitely look great on your resume and help you secure the job you envision.

In addition, you should clearly detail out your qualifications, experience and skills.
