What To Know About PALS Certification

By Olive Pate

Most cannot predict when there will be a medical emergency. This is why many take special classes and programs to become certified in various procedures used to save lives in these situations. It is important to be as prepared as possible. PALS stands for pediatric advanced life support. The goal of this is to improve the type of care that is given to children who are seriously injured or ill. It can save lives or better outcomes. PALS certification is available in many areas of the world.

Courses and programs on this topic provide students with education on responding effectively to medical emergencies that involve infants and kids. While these are lessons that everyone can benefit from learning, most of the people who take these courses are already involved in the health care field. They may be paramedics, nurses, physicians or other professionals who must be certified. It is common for this to be required for personnel in certain units.

Usually these are video-based, instructor-led, classroom courses. They employ a number of pediatric emergencies as a way to represent the importance of systematic approach to effective resuscitation, team dynamic, pediatric assessment, PALS algorithms and basic life support. Contents of these educational classes may differ in some respects. However, most of them do involve learning child and infant CPR and AED application.

It is expected that these people will have do go through discussions and simulations associated with cardiac, shock and respiratory cases. They will learn the changes in management or respiratory care, rhythm disturbances and electrical therapy, resuscitation, life support for kids, pediatric assessment and more. People should know the coursework and be prepared.

Completion can take up to 14 hours if everything must be done. This time includes lunch and breaks spent off. Some might just need to update their certification, in which case they are expected to take half the hours. Then there are those who update and do not do certain stations, which means only six hours may be necessary to finish. People should chat that they are enrolled in the correct program or course.

Those who successfully complete the course will receive a completion card or certification that is valid for up to two years. In order to receive completion, they must participate, practice and then complete all of the learning stations. They have to complete a closed-book exam with an 84 percent or high. They also have to pass PALS case scenarios and other skills tests.

The cost for these courses or materials will differ depending on instructor, training facility and similar factors. Typically, students will need to have PALS-related card, as well as a manual. Every individual will finish the courses in his or her own time. There are plenty of online PALS resources that are accessible to those who need them.

In many medical emergencies, the first stages of care make a big impact. They can save the life of a person or improve their overall condition. Infants and children are susceptible to injury and illnesses and may require a different approach to care than adults. PALS seeks to educate medical professionals, and others, on how to effectively address these emergency situations.
